Our dear friend and fellow folk dancer, Charlie Klabunde, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015. His obituary is below.

Born: October 28, 1931 Champagne, IL,
Died: February 7, 2015 Oak Ridge TN
Charlie is survived by his brother Philip of Wilmington, DE but predeceased by his parents, Walter & Harriet of Lewiston, NY & sister Suzanne Cantor of Mahwah, NJ. He lived in Niagara Falls, NY – graduated NFHS in 1949, Lehigh University with BS in 1953 & obtained MS in Physics from Illinois University in 1955. Thereafter living in Oak Ridge, TN working @ ORNL most recently researching super-conductivity, from which he retired in 1996.
An avid hiker & conservationist, Charles was very active with Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, and Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning – serving on their boards , editing & publishing their newsletters. Other active interests were model airplane flying, photography and folk dancing.
Memorial plans have not yet been finalized, but the SMHC group hopes to have a hike to honor his service in trail maintenance and to scatter his ashes where they will improve the fertility of the soil.
